The Story

I was nineteen years old when I walked into an airport and boarded a flight for the first time. My destination was Paris and I took the trip solo. The year was 2004. The amount of travel blogs that existed online (which catered to the first time woman of color traveler) to ease my anxieties and hold my hand was zero.

I was 22 when I decided to live abroad long term for the first time. My destination was Buenos Aires and I took the trip solo. The year was 2007. The amount of travel blogs that existed online to ease me, a young woman of color, through the anxiety of moving to a new country with an almost non existent black population was zero. There was no website to prepare me for the stares I would get or how aggressively I would be pursued like I was a rare piece of chocolate.

And it was in 2008— when I received emails from young women of color, thinking of embarking on their first travel journey or returning from one, who shared their travel fears and hopes with me—that I realized the need for Imported Chocolate’s existence. And to this day, I can confidently say, no travel blog exists quite like Imported Chocolate.

The Mission

Imported Chocolate isn’t solely for the woman of color already traveling. It’s for that young girl/woman of color who doesn’t know she’s in love with travel yet, because she didn’t think it was possible. Imported chocolate wasn’t created purely for those women of color with passports, but was created to inspire women of color to get one.

And now I need your help spreading my mission. I turn to you, my readers and first supporters of Imported Chocolate from its infancy. I am thankful for you and appreciate each and every one of you more than anything in the world. Help bring Imported Chocolate into the life of the young girl/woman of color in yours. Do you know women already traveling? How about that young girl or woman you’ve been trying to convince to get on a plane for years? Or maybe you know one who shares her dreams of travel with you but never takes the plunge? Introduce her to Imported Chocolate and take part in the word of mouth campaign and get this lovely gift for spreading the love:

The Gift

A luggage tag in a chocolate box!

These luggage tags are more than tags. They not only represent the woman of color traveler but the newbie traveler, standing in line outside her flight gate, with butterflies flitting in her stomach, clutching her first ticket.
